How did conservative politics and religion get so inter-twined in the USA?

I asked in the Politics section but no one in there really understand the question – they just seem to feel insulted and yell their mantras through cyberspace. I’ve noticed that even though the Tea Party started out as a libertarian movement it’s now full of Christian nuts. Why do conservative politics and Christianity go hand-in-hand in America?
